Haven't Blogged in So Long!

There has been so much going on, I have neglected the blog. I am promising myself this will happen no longer! I will post on the blog more often. The last post I made was when we got 5 new ducklings, 2 white runners and 3 critically endangered silver appleyards. The ducks are all grown up! Wow, funny how time flies by so fast. Another post to come later, promise!

( We would really like to get some hatching eggs, ducklings or adult birds that are unrelated to our silver appleyards. But for a good price.)

Ducklings!

Quackers (closest to camera) and Waddlesworth
Well, we have fourteen eggs in the incubator and are just waiting for that 21st day! However, this past Saturday we went to a swap meet and added a few more additions to the farm. We ending up getting 9 baby chicks and 5 ducklings. Here are a few pictures of the duckies; Waddlesworth, Quackers, Freddy, Daffy, and Donald!

Aren't they cute!?

Trying Some New Things!

About two weeks ago, we started something new! Our cousin had six adult guineas he wanted to give us, so he could make space for some ducks he was getting. We said sure bring them over! At first we didn't know what to think. However, after a few days we have come to see they are wonderful! They eat all kinds of bugs and snakes. They also move so quick, making a few laps around the farm each day. The guineas are also great watch birds, squawking when someone enters the yard.

In the next few weeks we are going to be trying another new thing... yesterday while at Tractor Supply we bought an egg incubator and automatic turner. So we are going to give that a try and keep you updated on how it works out for us!

Wish us luck!

Already?

It's already November and we haven't blogged for almost two whole months! Not much has happened around here.. just the usual school and work. Sage and the baby chicks are growing like weeds and everything has been picked from the garden. Not much else!

 Isn't he big?!?

The Tomato Guardian

We made up a quick scarecrow, to guard the tomatoes. Made from some old clothes and other things, she came to life...
Isn't she just darling?

No More!

Remember last year.. when the raccoons came, while we were on vacation? Well, if you don't they ate our whole little cornfield! Well, not this year! We finally gave in, bought, and put up an electric fence. We tried the music thing, with no luck. But, NO more coons! Now, don't worry too much, it will not kill any of them... just give them a little zap!
I look so cute and I love sweetcorn!

Remember, Momma Rosie laying on 16 eggs? Well so far we have two baby chicks (that just hatched) and I have a feeling more will hatch tonight! But, it's too dark to take pictures, tonight. Pictures will come in the next few days, promise. Anyway, the first one that hatched is rust color like Rosie and the other is black! We are so excited!
Just thought we would share our good news!

Chicken Fun

I found some fun chicken facts to go along with some new chicken pictures!!

There are more chickens on earth then there are people!
Chickens can run at a speed of 9 mph...(I didn't know it was that fast!)
A hen can lay up to 300 eggs a year.
The record for laying the most eggs in one day, from one hen is 7! Wow, I'm lucky if I get that from ALL my chickens in a day.
The greatest number of yolks in one egg is 9!!
A hen, while laying on eggs turns each egg 50 times a day so the yolk doesn't stick to the shell.
These are some pretty crazy fun facts!
Do you have any good chicken facts?

A Look Around...

We are going to let Rosie lay on her eggs and see what we get! Well they are not all her eggs, the others helped, but she is the only broody hen.
Rosie is laying on a total of 16 eggs! We will keep you on the update and hope we get some chicks!
Snoopy, as we renamed him because he lays on top of his house about 90 percent of the day. Is off his house to lay by the frozen water bottle and cool down.
Fresh garlic, laying on a screen to dry out. Yummy!

 Wagon full of flowers!
 Cone Flowers.. a favorite!
 Pansies on an old chair
